Communication is always number one because it is necessary in every step of the way.  Through communication you can find out more about your partner, the things he/she likes and the things he/she detests.  Communication plays a crucial role in a relationship because it defines what the next step will be.  Think of it as a compass that you need in looking for the right direction to take whenever you're lost and hopeless.  If you stay stationary, your relationship would become stagnant too.  You have to make a decision, one way or the other.  You just need to know which paths to take.

If you have misgivings, doubts or misunderstandings, you need to talk that out in a mature manner.  Always take into account both sides and come up with a solution that suits you both.

Remember that communication can also appear to be non-verbal.  A simple smile or frown is a cue to your next step.  Be observant!

If you see her frown or if you notice that she/he's become too silent, something is definitely wrong.  Talk to him/her and ask him/her what's wrong and if all else fails, try giving her/him a big hug and a kiss on the forehead or cheek and whisper to his/her ear that whatever's bothering her/him, he/she can always count on you.

Verbal and non-verbal gestures are your cues to the next step so be sure to pay close attention to those.  Never ignore simple words and actions because those simple gestures can mean a lot to someone. ^_^
